My favorite picture I've ever taken of you because it IS so you.
I remember turning 10 and pretty much the only thing I said all day long was Double! Digits!", and today is your big day, K! Ever since you were a toddler I would tell your mom that you guys were twins--though you were obviously shorter--and her response every single time was to say that you look more like your Daddy. I can see the physical resemblance there, so I don't disagree with her, but when I see you I can't help but be taken back to my own childhood, those years your mom & I grew up together in.
Your dad better start shining his shotguns to fend off the boys now!
You have your mom's sass, her spirit, and her spunk. I look at you and think, in the very best way, Here comes trouble! I see all those things in you that I saw in your mom when we met at the age of 11. I love that you send me surprise text messages and I love that when you answer the phone, we chat before you hand it over to your mom. I love that when she & I are talking way past your bedtime, she'll catch you sitting on the steps trying to listen in, or that you'll come downstairs asking for cheese about the time of night you should be in the REM sleep stage.
"Mom, can I have some CHEESE?"
When you're old enough, I'll to tell you & your brother all kinds of stories about your mom & I when we were kids. Until then, you just keep right on being Little Miss Personality because it gives me a reason to love being a photographer, even when the people who pay me to be one drive me mental.
Giggles ensued for hours after I pointed out your nail polish was the color of Pepto-Bismol.
Luckily your mother (and your grandmother, for that matter!) doesn't fall under the category of people who drive me mental because, 1) I only let her pay me in wine; and 2) by the time I'm done "collecting my payment" from her, I'm too tipsy for her to make me crazy. Besides, even if she DID drive me mental, she knows way too much dirt about my past (and present!) for me to ever cause a fuss over it. But she doesn't drive me mental. Really.
Three generations of my favorite females!
Happy Birthday, to my favorite 10-year old!

That first one really is a keeper...and I think Daddy better buy an automatic shotgun...he's going to have his hands full!
Happy Birthday!
She is simply gorgeous! Happy Birthday!
Someday I want to be able to tribute just like you, you're amazing.
What a lovely young lady! Happy Birthday!
My niece just turned 11 yesterday. I'm a crappy aunt and didn't even mention it on my blog.
Happy Birthday K! Or should I say J jr.? I thought I was the only one with a mini-me! I still love those pictures. They're just gorgeous.
Yep, you and Mellissa are right, Dad's ammo bills are gonna be hell.
I'm trying to figure out why you don't post more of these awesome pictures you have taken. You have a great camera eye. Thanks to digital cameras, you don't have to develop them manually anymore since you obviously botched your college assignment. :)
@Spammon: I don't post more of my images because the internet can be a creepy place. I have a flickr pro account but always worry someone's gonna steal my stuff (not b/c it's "awesome" but because people can be weird, just ask me about the spandex fetishist who took one of my old photos and posted it with his scary collection of gross "self" portraits) and use it for things I don't have control over. Thanks for the props, though! I will try to post other things but it really does give me pause every time I decide to put something I've shot on my blog or on Flickr, because you just never know where it's going to end up.
Wow! You ended up in a spandex fetish website? That's why I stick to nature shots. Not me in nature, or trying be 'El Natural', but trees, animals and other such inanimate objects.
I haven't bothered putting any of them on Flickr, so far I just run it all from my own website.
btw, What camera do you have?
@Spammon: Yeah. It was THIS photo, from when I was 15-- which you can only see about 3 inches of bike shorts peeking out under my long shirt. It was insane because all his other photos (the few I stuck around long enough to see) were of him wearing spandex or pantyhose, and they weren't of his face, if you know what I'm sayin'. I'm sure he had other people's innocuous spandex photos in his collection, but I got mine out of there & blocked that guy immediately. Hey, if you want to have a specialized fetish, go for it... but don't involve me without asking. Heh. I'm gagging right now, thanks for bringing back that memory.
I don't do a whole lot of nature shots (trees OR "el natural"), mostly people. You're right about putting them on my own site, it would be (hopefully) different than on Flickr; but I'm still gunshy. I'll definitely think about adding more, though. Thanks for the encouragement; you'll only have yourself to blame when you tire of me shoving my portfolio down your throat via my RSS feed.
I have always had Minoltas. My latest (purchased after my NYC apt. break-in; which reminds me I never blogged about bringing down that crime ring) is a Minolta Maxxum 8000i, which is an SLR from 1997-ish. It was the top of their line back then, and I have no complaints. I have 3 lenses: 28mm (wide) 52mm, and a 70-210mm zoom.
I'm not shooting digital yet. I still like having negatives; or at least that's what I'm telling myself since I can't justify the purchase of the digital camera/lens outfit I REALLY want. Yup, still shootin' old school.
Now that's a picture that belongs in a time capsule! I'm wondering if it should have been on a Def Leppard fetish side instead! It's okay though, at least you didn't take a school picture with a pin on button that said 'I break for bears' with a picture of the Bernstain Bears on it. That could have landed me on an 'I'm with stupid' fetish website.
If you decide to host your own site, check out jalbum.net. You can either host there or at least use their software for your albums. It's awesome and it's free. They have tons of templates and you can edit them to your pleasing if you want.
Ah old school! That's awesome. Not too many people doing that anymore. Since I am by no means a professional, doing everything manual would mean I would most likely go through 3 rolls of film before getting 1 good picture. So now I just shoot everything in RAW mode which is the equivalent of the negative in the digital world. And at least if you buy a Minolta Digital SLR, you can still keep your lenses. That's one thing I need to invest more in.
If you get a site up or something, I'd love to check it out. I like to learn new stuff by looking at other peoples pictures.
Now, a Def Lep fetish site I would have had NO problem with! Ok, your "I break for bears" story? Is that true? Methinks some of my gay friends would love to have that pin today. Your childhood wardrobe was incredible according to the photos Linds had up for your bday. I'm jealous. I did have a purple velvet outfit that my mom made for me. It outshined (outshone?) everything else in my closet. I don't think I even own anything today that could beat it. Favorite!
So, for your own photos you have a whole other website?! I thought you were talking about your blog. Jalbum looks cool, thanks for the info. I'm definitely going to look into that.
The beauty of the minolta iSeries (which came along WAY before Apple started putting "i" in front of everything!) is that it's both automatic and manual, so you wouldn't have any trouble getting a good shot. For real! What digital are you using? I'm definitely tempted to go that route, but I want to wait until I can do it right. I think it would probably change everything about how I go about doing photoshoots. Being free of film constraints would be good and bad. I know editing through photos I took just because they're instant and because I could will double the number of frames I shoot... still, it would be a lot of fun.
I'll let you know if/when I do a photo site!
Unfortunately yes, this is a true story. I'll dig the up the picture and post it up one of these days.
Yeah, I rarely post any of my pictures on my blog. All those are just silly ones. Occasionally they show up on there or Lindsey's blog. I'd give you an address but since I just re-installed my server to Ubuntu, I haven't had the time to get my site up and running yet. When I do, I'll shoot you the link. For the longest time I didn't use photoshop for my pics. Don't ask me why. It was my ego thinking I could do fine without it. I've posted some of them here. Obviously, there are some in there that look like Porter could have snapped them.
I started out doing everything automatic, but then moved to manual because I could do so much more. I usually end up taking 10 pics of each composition with different f-stops and shutter speeds so i can get a good comparison and find the exact picture I want. I'm sure if I was doing film, I wouldn't be doing that at all. I guess that's the joys/misery of having digital. When I have shot with film, I am much more stingy about the pictures I take.
I am using the Digital Rebel XT. I bought it almost 4 years ago. I have the standard 23-55mm lens it came with and a 75-300mm zoom lens. It's crazy that the price of cameras is so cheap now. The new Rebel XSi can be found for less than a thousand and the XTi can be found for a mere $400 with lens if you look in the right places.
I beg to differ on your use of the word "silly", especially with today's Happy Mushroom. That photo has probably changed the trajectory of my life.
Definitely send me the link if you get your site going again-- you can just email it to me if you don't want to put it in the comments: casajules (at) gmail (dot) com
Yeah, shooting manual with digital really is a whole other world. I'm glad I waited so long to go that route, because you're right about the prices. They've come down so much in the past 5 years even... but for now I'm sticking with my old standby. One of my friends has a Nikon outfit that would make anyone drool. It's sick, in the best way. She has thousands of dollars wrapped up in it but like you said, the good thing about sticking with the same brand is that she was able to use all her old lenses when she upgraded. Now I better go get a 2nd job to pay for all these things I want to buy.
OH, and on that other site you linked to... I checked it out and THE CRITIQUES??? I started to break a sweat thinking about that. You're a brave man. I only like positive responses to my images. (Just kidding, but OMG, having total strangers tell me my pictures could be better would probably not sit well with me).
I wish I had more cash to drop on camera equipment. I saw on B&H Photo a few months ago a $100,000 lens made my Canon. Apparently they are custom made for the folks shooting for National Geographic and Sports Illustrated and there are less than 20 of them. And that was the used price. I tried to convince Linds for about .00001 seconds. But the idea of living on the streets with a cool lens didn't sit well with her.
Yeah, if you post pics on hat site you gotta be able to take the critiques. Nobody on there is rude or demeaning in any way. They have given me some good tips and things to look for when I take pictures now. I haven't posted anything new on there for awhile but trust me, they look much better than the crud on there. The only two that are somewhat decent are the birds and the furnace room. :)
If you think the B&H photo WEBSITE is a good source of fun things like $100,000 lenses, you should take a trip to NYC and go to the actual store. It is like nirvana (as in heaven, not the Kurt Cobain-fronted band from the days of grunge). I spent a lot of time there when I lived out east, and even bought my 8000i there after the break-in. The store is an unbelievable example of a well-oiled machine. They have people working upstairs behind the counters and then people working downstairs in the storage area. When someone buys something, they alert the people downstairs, who send the products upstairs using a system of pulleys, levers, and green B&H containers on automated tracks that hang from the ceiling. It's like clockwork, and crazy to watch.
It's interesting you mention this because a guy I work with was just telling me about his visit there last month. It was exactly as you described it with the pulleys and stuff. Next time I make a trip out there I will for sure be stopping by.
Well fetish guy was a real dipshit! I mean CLEARLY this is the fetish shot! :)
Holy crap, Rob, I just saw this comment NOW. Hilarious, as ever. :)
