Robert Frost said it best

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down today.
Nothing gold can stay.

–Robert Frost

The news that Estelle Getty passed away after years with Alzheimers dementia made me want to shell out the cash for every Golden Girls DVD ever made. My friends & I LOVE that show, and yesterday I realized how much it still comes up in conversation. Like, in THIS POST I wrote about my last trip to Las Vegas.

I talked to 4 of my friends last night about how bummed out we were to know she's gone, but all the more reason to plan a Golden Girls-themed party. It's still in the discussion stages, but I'll keep you posted on the details. In the meantime, here are a few of my favorite Sophia-centric things:

The best Estelle Getty clip of all time (besides the myriad of scenes from GG) is from one of the reincarnations of Password, a game show that Betty White's real-life husband Allen Ludden originally hosted. I love how offended Betty looks when Estelle takes a stab at the answer:

Host: "We have loose, would you like to take a guess?" Estelle Getty: "Is it Betty White?"

I love Valentines Day and I love The Golden Girls, and I plan to e-mail this to all of my friends come February:

The small print underneath Sophia's valentine says, "(Seriously, though; maybe tonight?) (At least consider it.)"

Someone else in my circle won a Halloween costume contest in October (I'm not actually in this photo). His biting wit in the e-mail that came with the photo still cracks me up:
This is the Golden Girls costume that won us 1st place at the West Hollywood Halloween Carnival. It is also most likely the reason I am still single.

West Hollywood-style Golden Girls. I'm not any of these people.

R.I.P., Estelle!

OMG, that picture is hysterical! i didn't realize Estelle Getty had passed.

I remember sitting on the davenport with my grandma rubbing my back watching that show when I was still a little girl.

I still watch reruns on Lifetime...they remind me of my gp's!!

I used to watch Golden Girls all the time and loved Estelle Getty. I was so bummed when I heard the news of her passing.

The photo of the Halloween costumes is priceless!!

I had no idea she passed away either. It probably happened during the media obsessed Christie Brinkley divorce case or something...

I used to watch Golden Girls with my mom. Even though Spam hates that show and forbids it to be watched in our house, I still hold a special place for it in my heart.

Yes, it's true, I despised that show. And I still do. I think because whenever I had to sleep at my grandma's house as a kid she would always have to watch that every Friday night. Then it was The Lawrence Welk show. But I still like bubbles. Go figure.

Wasn't she also in Mannequin? Another fine 80's movie I really hope they remake.

I had no idea what a lanai was until I learned it from the Golden Girls.

RIP!

I totally had an "Outsiders" flashback reading that Robert Frost poem, which led me to think of William Zaaabka, which led me to thinking about things that are gay, which brought me full circle to my obsession with The Golden Girls. I watch it every night on Lifetime and while Blanche is my GG double, Sophia has always been my favorite. R.I.P.

Golden Girls marathon on July 25th from 12-5 p.m. on Lifetime!

those are the BEST Halloween costumes EVER.

I also forgot to give some serious props to those costumes. I couldn't muster up something that amazing and clever if my life depended on it! I'm guessing that every 70 year old in the joint was begging for your numbers?

@Melissa: Aww, what a sweet memory! I watch the reruns, too.

@Sauntering: Isn't it?

@Linds: She just died yesterday, so this post was hot off the press. How can Spammon veto that classic show? Sophia's quick wit is right up his alley!

@Spammon: I don't get how you could like Lawrence Welk and NOT Golden Girls. This confounds me. I'm not sure about Mannequin but she was in that gem with Sly Stallone: Stop! Or my mom will shoot! As for the costumes, I wasn't there to see it but since they won, I'm sure they got handed a few digits! Other than that, I can't believe you're speechless.

@SisMis: I called my fire escape in my NJ apt my lanai because of the GG!

@Troop Jen: It's not Zaaabka, It's Zaaaaaabka, and one day those GG might be us. Rather, we might be them. Of course we'll assume our natural roles: you as Blanche, and me as a MUCH younger Sophia. Mostly so I can get away with calling everyone pussycat, but also because I am known for my zingers. As in one-liners, not snack cakes.

@hotfessional: Genius, right?!

She actually had Dementia, not Alzheimer's (they're a bit different). She really was an incredibly and spirited woman. She'll definitely be missed.

@WomensDaily: You're absolutely right. Thanks for the correction!

I LOVE the Golden Girls! I was so excited to work from home on Monday to be able to watch them. It was the episode where Rose was scared she had AIDS. It was like an after-school special for old people. RIP Sofia!

Picture it. Miami. 2045.
I am soooo Dorothy to your Sophia, and can't wait to brow beat Blanche. (Love you J!) Now we just need a Rose, a kick ass lanai, some sweet pastel flowy negligees, and most importantly CHEESECAKE!! God Bless Lifetime and reruns, so we won't have to miss her so much.

House of Jules said...

@Kristabella: GG and The Price is Right (when Barker hosted, anyway!) are the best things to watch when home from work!

@Stacey: You painted such a perfect picture for me that I want it to be 2045 RIGHT NOW. You ARE so Dorothy, and just for that I'm going to start calling you Pussycat. Who is gonna be our Rose? I know ONE of us has the exact person to fill out our party of 4.... Jen will bring the negligees, you bring the cheesecake, and I'll bring the BEEFCAKE. My god, you can't leave that out. I'll meet you on our lanai.
PS- Who's gonna wrestle the Dyson out of Rob's grip?

@Jozet: I will pass along the compliments. I'm not in the photo, but I wish I was.

I thought I was the only 8-year-old who was hooked on the Golden Girls! Maybe that's why, 20 years later, I married someone simply because he reminds me of Bea Arthur.

I love Estelle. And that clip is hilarious.

Okay. This costume rocks.

I want to hang with your friends.

They know how to party.

Golden girl style.

House of Jules said...

@MrsMouthy: The end of your comment took me so off guard I almost choked. Hilarious!

@CherryRide: Oh, you KNOW I do! (You know that I know that you know...)

@ShamelesslySassy: I love finding stuff like that on YouTube.

@LovelyDisturbance: From now on, Golden Girl-style is the only way I'm partying.

No no no, I don't like Lawrence Welk, I just like bubbles. That show makes me feel weird inside. That feeling like I am living in 1964 and residing in a rest home.

Second, I loved the Golden Girls... watched it all the time! And to comment on why your friend is still single... just ha. Sorry, had to say it, looks like a great group to hang out with tho!!

Loved Estelle!
