Things said to me in conversation with friends down south; also see: "Things you'd never hear in Chicago"

These are just 4 of the many charmingly southern things said to me this week while visiting very charming southern friends. They actually say things like this in everyday conversation. Really.

1) "Man, I'm dying for some pimento cheese!"

2) "Go three clicks west until you see a black dog tied to the wheel well of a rusted out monster truck, and then take a left."

3) "You can gitchoo some sweet tea at Mac-Donald's."

4) "Hey Darlin'!"

When I get back home I'll miss hearing #4 the most. By far.

I heard about the tons of sweet tea they seem to consume and entirely run on down south. Is it really this bad? Is it like ice tea or is it hot tea? Earl Grey or the fruity kind? I have no idea? Can someone please let me know what kind they favor in the South?

We lived in TN for years growing up and sweet tea is one of my favorite drinks ever. I'm pretty sure you could just use the old stand-by: Lipton. Let it brew in the sun, add copious amounts of sugar and chill; then serve with lots of ice... but I've attempted it more than once and it NEVER tastes like it does when my friend's mom or grandmother makes it.

I've been getting one for myself every morning at the McDonald's (MAC-Donald's!!!) drive-thru while I'm here and today's my last day to do it before heading back north to Chicago.

If you click on the "sweet tea" hotlink in the post, you'll be able to read more info on it.

Who could POSSIBLY be dying for pimiento cheese?????

Actually, Jim could. His mom used to make it from scratch and he loved it. Right Jim? LOL

KATE WAS DYING FOR PIMIENTO CHEESE!!! I told her after she lamented over how to make it from scratch that I never, ever heard someone say they were dying for that, EVER. It was a first.

Huh! I'm going to have to give her a hard time about that! :)

Whoa, that's gotta be sweet. I do like the odd cup of ice tea but I don't like it too sweet. Now that was a really cool thing to learn and I shall try it if I ever get to go South in the States.

You have to put in the 1-2 cups of sugar (per 3 quarts of tea) while the tea is still hot so it melts. Stir well. Then, put it in the fridge or pour it over tons of ice to get good sweet iced tea. i never could perfect it, by my Nanny sure could.

other southernisms you didnt mention:
"It's comin' up a cloud" - meaning, 'it looks like it's going to rain'

"Im fixin' to cut on the light" - meaning "i'm going to turn on the lights now"

"'Sup Y'all" - the Urban Southern version of "Hello"

Yes, i grew up in N.C. and went to college in N.C. and S.C. I live in TX now, but the minute i cross over the NC or SC border, the accent and southernisms come right back.
